Optical and biogeochemical conditions across Long Island Sound and New York coastal waters
Follow Our Work
Space-based retrievals of water quality conditions in Long Island Sound complement ongoing, long-term, comprehensive in-situ water quality monitoring surveys conducted year-round by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). Data from the surveys are used to quantify and identify annual trends and differences in water quality parameters relevant to hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen), especially nutrients, temperature, and chlorophyll. These data are also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the management program to reduce nitrogen concentrations.
Water Quality and Hypoxia Newsletters published by CT-DEEP integrate satellite observations in their water quality and hypoxia assessments across Long Island Sound.
